Some grooming tools for men are unusual in form, but they deliver just the same basic job of trimming and shaving hair. One of these tools is the Philips Norelco OneBlade – we think that this is a very special trimmer. As the name implies, it works with a single blade that can do at least two things – shaving and trimming.
According to Philips, the OneBlade has been “specially designed to suit the modern man’s needs.” It promises to shave facial and body hair to a precise and desired trim. However, it doesn’t quite make a close shave, which leaves a bit of length after shaving. Perhaps you may even do that better with just a regular razor.
But there are pluses about this Philips Norelco OneBlade which make it one of the best trimmers lately. Read on to find about it more.
The Written Review
As far as appearances go, the Philips Norelco OneBlade isn’t like the other electric groomers. It has a narrow body and a single blade. It looks like your regular wet and dry shaver, only made electric. It has a plastic and rubber body and a sleek and modern design, although you may not find its vivid yellow-green highlights appealing. Locating the power button is not hard because you can see it right on the front part of the shaver. It has a rubber grip for a secure handling; even while you’re shaving in the shower, this tool is guaranteed not to slip from your hand.
Let’s get first to the shaver head: compared to the rest of its body, the shaver head is quite small – heck, it even looks funny, it’s like a strange creature from outer space. But do not be deceived by its small size and rather comical appearance – for sure, Philips knew what they were doing while they were designing the blades and shaver head. These are, in fact, excellent blades which are the evidence of a masterful feat of engineering.
On the top and bottom edges of the blades are tiny comb teeth which are designed to shield your skin from the sharp blades. That explains why it doesn’t make quite a close shave, because the tiny comb teeth protect your skin from the blades. This results to a comfortable, pain-free shaving as Philips Norelco OneBlade doesn’t touch and scrape the skin, while the blades still do the work of cutting your facial or body hair to a precise trim. This gives you a nice and fashionable “five-o-clock shadow,” only appearing earlier.
You can even use the Philips Norelco OneBlade in a back-and-forth motion, and this is a unique feature which you cannot find on a regular razor and many other electric trimmer brands. This gives you a lot more flexibility when you shave and trim.
The blades’ criss-cross pattern is not just for appearance’s sake. It is designed that way to make your shaving unbelievably smooth without catching or snagging your hair.
Speaking of flexibility again, the design of the blades allows the shaving head to remain close to the skin as possible (without scraping it) while shaving on more contoured and jagged areas such as the jawline.
Each unit of the Philips Norelco OneBlade includes two blades and four stubble combs in different sizes: 3/64 inches, 1/8 inches and 3/16 inches. The blade should be replaced every four months if you use it at least twice a week. This one of the few grooming tools that “forces” you into buying replaceable blades… which can be a bit annoying to some. But hey, if your priority is hygiene over cost, using new blades every four months isn’t bad at all.
Regarding other features, the Philips Norelco OneBlade is a rechargeable grooming tool. It has a nickel-metal hydride (Ni-MH) battery instead of lithium ion (Li-Ion) battery found in most electric trimmer models. So it means charging takes a lot more time – typically about eight hours – to provide enough power for 45 minutes of use. So we recommend charging this trimmer overnight while you sleep.
The Philips Norelco OneBlade works quick enough especially if you have medium-sized hair standing stiff and upright. But if you have facial and body hair that’s rather long and lying in every direction, it requires more than one pass from this trimmer to reach to your desired hair length.
Final Mark from the Beard Institute
If you are after a very close and clean shave, the Philips Norelco OneBlade won’t make the cut. We’re saying it again – your regular razor may do that even better.
But if you’re after that appealing “five-o-clock shadow” look or if you’re the type who wants to maintain a clean stubble, the Philips Norelco OneBlade will do them perfectly. Since the blades do not (and should not) touch and scrape the skin, we find the Philips Norelco OneBlade as one of the most comfortable electric trimmers we have ever seen just yet.
You may find the regular replacement of the blades a bit annoying because it means additional expense. Otherwise, the Philips Norelco OneBlade is one heck of an electric groomer overall.
